DESIGN OPTIMIZATION - Getting "the most" out of your
design.
Often, strategic design and branding firms are so focused on the strategic
part of design development (the "pretty, warm and fuzzy, feel-good" stuff),
they fall short on the tactical part (the "cost-to-implement" stuff).
While relevant brand messages and compelling graphics are paramount to the
successful marketing of your product, this only goes so far in making your
product profitable long term.
Today's savvy brand marketers are recognizing the need to align themselves
with two uniquely different types of design firms, one to develop the
foundational strategic brand design platform, and one to guard the brand's
equity while "optimizing" it long term.
Here's Why...
What may be a sound strategic design solution today may start to lose its
overall effectiveness tomorrow. This is because the environment in which a
package has to perform is prone to change. Every time consumer influences
change, a competitor makes a design or product improvement, your
merchandiser makes a new demand for space or price reduction, or new package
engineering processes are developed, the environment in which your product
has to perform changes.
So good package design is never finished. To compete long term, marketers
are retaining tactical design specialists to continually evolve and
"optimize" their packaging so they remain relevant in this ever-changing
environment.
At BDG, we specialize in "optimization" and evolution of branded packaging
design. We help ensure that you continue to get "the most" out of your
design and prolong and improve the effectiveness of your brand's strategic
message.

"MATERNITY ALERT"
Background:
Maternity Alert is a product designed to aid in the protection of an
expecting mother and her unborn child. The product was designed to inform
EMT's and healthcare providers of a trauma victim's pregnant state, in the
event that she is unable to communicate.
Scope:
The product was initially developed as a blister carded kit, which held and
prominently displayed: 2-Auto Window Alert Stickers, 1-Wallet Medical
Information Card, 1-"PREGNANT" Engraved ID Bracelet, and 1-Permanent Marker.
BDG (Business Design Group) was retained after the client was unhappy with
the branding, graphic design, and overall packaging direction.
After assessing the existing packaging, BDG determined the following:
- Graphics lacked consumer appeal and the vibrancy necessary to "alert" care
providers
- Items that made up the product, individually, had minimal consumer
appeal
- Package size was too large to gain retailer acceptance
- Blister packaging was not an appropriate packaging solution for this
product
Solution:
BDG retooled the original brand logo typography, added vibrancy to the color
pallet, slimmed down the expectant mother graphic, and added a "pregnant
glow" around the figure. This enhanced the appeal to expecting mothers and
created a higher visibility to alert care providers.
The new brand elements were then applied consistently to the branded product
pieces and a new package design concept was created. By showing the products
through in-use photography, the new design focused on the product benefit
(enhancing security for the Expecting Mother and her unborn child) vs. the
products themselves.
The redesign of the packaging resulted in 4 key benefits:
- A more appealing brand identity
- Improved communication of the product benefit
- Reduced size of the overall package by half, making it more appealing
to retailers
- Substantially reduced the cost of the packaging
